Holly Stibbon passes SBS Cyber Security’s GDPR training course

Held within the stately Victorian offices of Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, SBS Cyber Security recently delivered a 2-day training course, focused on GDPR. The General Data Protection Regulation comes into force in May 2018, requiring almost every business in the UK to assess and restructure the way in which it holds customer data.

GDPR is a complicated regulation, accompanied by severe sanctions for those firms who fail to comply and allow their customer data bases to be compromised through breaches and hacks. The regulation gives new powers to both the Information Commissioner, who can levy heavy fines and penalties, as well as to consumers, or “data subjects”, who gain enhanced rights over how their data is retained and managed.

Peter Farrer, ISO 27001 Lead Auditor & Implementer delivered SBS’s practical, GDPR training course, which cuts through the legal jargon, using hands on workshops to demonstrate how to structure data in order to achieve compliance and pass future audit.

Following the course, Holly Stibbon, Director at 101Smart Limited made the following statement:

“As a Director of a website design and email marketing company, we hold and process valuable customer data and take seriously our responsibilities towards data protection and the need to comply with GDPR.

The practical, hands-on GDPR training course delivered by SBS took me through the key stages of GDPR: Discover, Manage, Protect and Report. This structured approach to data management, along with practical workshops, taught me how to assess and classify various data types and map the data into an inventory, so that I know what data I hold, how it is recorded and where it is stored. By understanding the data types, I was able to assess the sensitivities and risks around this data, gaining a full knowledge of Privacy By Design and Privacy Impact Assessments, which are key elements to GDPR. Using readily available software tools, the course took me through encryption and anonymisation techniques that protect subject data from misuse should it be lost.

Although GDPR is complicated, by breaking it down into manageable sections, SBS gives you the tools and training to fully comply with GDPR and pass future data protection audits.”
